Welcome to the Department of Chemistry - Head of Chemistry, Prof. Mick Morris

Prof. Mick Morris - Head of DepartmentWelcome to the Department of Chemistry at University College Cork.  The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest, most dynamic centres of scientific scholarship in Ireland with a focus on excellence in both education and research. The strength and diversity of our undergraduate degree programmes attracts a large cohort of talented students to study chemistry at UCC, including students from as far away as the USA and China.  Our undergraduate teaching programmes provide a strong background in all aspects of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical and analytical) and allow specialisation in areas such as pharmaceutical, materials, environmental and forensics.

Research is an important focus within the Department and centres on the interdisciplinary fields of pharmaceutical chemistry, nanoscience and nanotechnology and atmospheric chemistry and development of new analytical sciences.   The Department of Chemistry has strong links to other UCC research centres such as the Tyndall National Institute, the Environmental Research Institute   and theAnalytical & Biological Chemistry Research Facility.  As well as this, departmental staff have strong links to other Irish centres of excellence such as CRANN (Trinity College Dublin).  The international reputation of many of our staff, draws a large number of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to UCC, from Ireland, Britain, Europe, China and India and several other countries.  The Department also has strong links to local, national and international industries and researchers work closely with staff of companies such as Intel, Pfizer, Ely-Lily, Millipore, Johnson and Johnson as well as smaller local companies such as Glantreo.

These are exciting times for the Department of Chemistry. We have appointed several new academic staff over the last few years, bringing fresh perspectives to our teaching and opening up new avenues of research.   The department boasts of world class infrastructure with state-of-the-art facilities for electron microscopy, NMR, x-ray diffraction, chromatography etc. as well as access to facilities such as nanofabrication, material analysis, bioassay etc. in our partner research institutes.

We believe that the Department of Chemistry is a vibrant and exciting place to work and study.  We value every member of staff, every researcher and every student and offer an environment that allows everybody to deliver their true potential.
