Biography

Dr. David J. Otway obtained his BSc, PhD, ARCS, and DIC from Imperial College. He has held research posts at Georgia Tech., Atlanta, USA with Prof. W. S. Rees, Jr. , at Imperial College with Prof. Sir G. Wilkinson, FRS and Prof. O’Brien. He was also a fixed-term lecturer in the Electronic Materials Group in the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College.

He then worked for a start-up company - Amedis Pharmaceuticals Ltd, UK (later acquired by Paradigm Therapeutics Ltd, UK) initially running their chemistry function and this role later developed into being the Competitive Intelligence, Cheminformatics and Information Manager for the company (2001-2005). He moved back to academia taking a position at UCC in 2005.

Dr. Otway is the co-designer of the new UCC chemistry website, the UCC representative of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a member of the teaching and examinations committee, the staff representative on the Student Chemical Society at UCC, a member of the Staff/Student Committee, a member of the Organization Team for the 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Colloquim (which was held in UCC 11th-13th June 2008), a member of The Promotion of Chemistry Team at UCC, coordinator of three chemistry modules (CM2001, CM4104 and CM4107) and also responsible for the overall coordination of Year 3 of Undergraduate Chemistry Course.

Research interests

Dr. Otway's principal teaching and research interests are in Organometallic Chemistry, Main Group & Lanthanide Chemistry and Inorganic Materials Chemistry. He is part of a SFI funded (4.2 million euro) Strategic Research Cluster (led by Prof. Martyn Pemble @ the Tyndall) - FORME - Functional Oxide and Related Materials for Electronics
